Most of my friends and family that want to start blogging always ask you for the "magic formula" for a successful blog.  They want to know how to start it, how to make money from it, and how to get hits.  They also usually ask me what to write about.  I always tell them its not as complicated as they make it seem, but there are some key tools they'll need in their toolbox to succeed.  They are Outposts, Networking, Shareable content and a Newsletter (a List!).

I've written a few articles in the past about how to start a blog, so I won't cover the tech of that here.  Domains, Hosting and CMS sofware can all be easily aqquired. I want to discuss the common denominators of successful bloggers.  I'll call it the blogger tool kit - yes i'm coining that term ;p  The first component of the toolkit is creating shareable content.

Welcome and thanks for reading the seventh and final part in my series on using goal setting to improve your blog.  In this final part I will go over Networking and Relationship building, the keys to expanding your blogs visibility.  You can only promote yourself so far; creating and developing relationships with other bloggers and members of the web community is what will truly take your blog and traffic to the next level!

Creating and Managing Outposts
An outpost is your "home away from home" on the web; its your presence on a website, blog or social network that draws people to your blog.  Examples of outposts can be your twitter page (mine is twitter.com/mikewayne), your myspace page, or your facebook page.  If you want to drive traffic, having an outpost is a must.  It's one of the easiest ways to direct targeted traffic yo your blog.  You just need to ensure you are not losing productivity because of them and that using them to build genuine relationships.

Creating Revenue Streams, Sales Plans and Forecasting: Setting Goals to Improve Your Blog Part Six PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the penultimate chapter in my seven part series on Setting Goals to Improve Your Blog.  In this post I will get to the "meaty" part of Blogging, what all most new Bloggers want to know: How can I make money blogging?  There are many answers to this question.  I simply intend to go over the options out there and show their strengths and weaknesses.  It's up to you to choose the best option for you!

Blog Monetization: How will you make money with your blog?

There are countless topics to blog about out there, some more easy to monetize than others.  Your choice of content and niche can have a bigger impact on your ease of monetization than your actual work rate!  What I mean by this is that certain topics can generate more "qualified" buyers than others.  By "qualified" i mean people who are ready to buy.  Take a review site for example - generally people look at reviews right around the time that they are ready to buy something.  So by creating reviews on highly commissionable items you could theoretically increase your chances of turning a profit.

Setting Goals to Improve Your Blog Part Five

Welcome to part five in my series on using goal setting to improve your blog!

In this post i'll be going over the benefits of using good SEO and why it's important to set traffic goals.  Despite what the "experts" these topics are not as complicated as they seem.  As with anything, with careful planning and consistent execution you can succeed at setting traffic goals and attaining them.

SEO
SEO, or Seach Engine Optimization is simply optimizing your webpages so they can be indexed higher on search engines (most notably Google) for specific search terms.  In layman's terms all this means is when someone searches for any particular topic that your website or blog covers, your site would appear as high as possible on search for that topic because you optimized it using good SEO practices.  What are good SEO practices? Using key words in your posts as frequently as possible but not overdoing it.  Using Meta Tags, Headings, Appealing Post Subjects, alt tags, and designing pages using CSS and Div's rather than tables.

Setting Goals to Improve Your Blog Part 4

Many bloggers, eager to hit the ground running fail to do the necessary legwork when it comes to their new online activity.  Many have day jobs, with employee confidentiality clauses and blogging policies.  Many who seek to blog for revenue fail to form the proper legal structure to accept payments from affiliates and customers. You don't want the wrath of the IRS nor the ire of your employer by blogging - that's why you have to do some simple things before you begin blogging.

Employer Blogging Policy
One of the first things you need to do if you are employed is to refer to your employers blogging policy.  You'll be surprised to find that the majority of businesses have a policy in place for blogging and online communications of their employees.  If you are planning on creating custom applications or work for your blog, you also might be angered to find that some employers have a clause that grants them ownership of anything you invent during your employment contract.  There are some loopholes that you can explore, such as using a friend/spouse as a dummy "owner" and blogging for them, wink wink.  Whatever you do, just be sure that you are fully aware of the legal implications of blogging from your employer.
