So you’ve created your blog and you are ready for millions of hits, visitors and recognition. Problem is your visitor stats show 1 unique visitor per day (you) and few pageviews. It’s cool having the opportunity to have a “unique voice” online, with the chance to be viewed by millions of people. The catch is that if nobodies reading your blog, you really just have a glorified online diary. Here are some tips I’ve stumbled on to over time to help you at least get looked at – it’s then up to you to keep your readers coming back! I’m still working on that part
Join the Social Networks
It’s almost becoming a cliché these days. If you’re serious about being a recognized “voice” in the online world you must have your “flag” posted on as many outposts as possible. The “Big Three” are a no brainer - Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn – they have millions of ACTIVE users and give you an ample viewing audience to build relationships with. Notice I say “Build Relationships” and not “Advertise”.
If you join these networks just to promote your URL, don’t expect success or respect. “Link Whores” can be seen a mile away. The practice of broadcasting your link to anyone and everyone may work for half a minute but in the long run all it will do is make you look stupid. Create actual friendships and have something useful to say and people will NATURALLY come to your site to learn more about you. Build the relationship first!
Besides the “Big Three”, I can’t stress enough the value of Twitter. It’s got millions of active and interesting people sending and replying to short messages about anything you can imagine. Again, the human touch is what will separate you from the pack and help you build relationships here as well. I suggest following bloggers who you admire and LISTEN to how they interact with their reader base. Learn the proper twitter “etiquette” before you start opening your big mouth, lol. Always offer value to others FIRST and the pageviews will follow.
Provide Regular Updates (Fresh Content)
After you’re done joining the networks and building relationships you MUST provide regularly scheduled updates (new posts, video’s, etc) that will give people a reason to check back often. If you never update, why should I visit your blog? Keep it easy to read, informative and pack in valuable information that I can’t read somewhere else and I’m yours
Create and maintain a method of keeping your readers consistently informed of updates (status messages, tweets, etc).
You can create a newsletter or provide RSS feeds so that people can choose how they want updates delivered as well – I highly recommend it. Whatever you do, a plain simple truth of life is that people get used to “routines” – once you develop a steady routine or rhythm that works, DON’T BREAK IT – or risk losing some loyal and regular users.
Provide Interactivity
Although it’s YOUR blog, you’re not going to be the only person who will want a say. Your readers will need a way to interact with you and other readers. You simply MUST have a comment system for every posting on your site. It gives your readers a chance to agree, disagree and interact on topics that fire them up! It also provides a vehicle for them to promote themselves (what, you thought you would be the only one promoting something???). A healthy debate on a posting is good for your blog and its good for your readers – it’s a win/win situation. I would also recommend creating a message board/forum after your reader base has grown to provide and even bigger outlet for your readers.
These are just a small sample of the things you can do RIGHT NOW to begin growing your readership. There are many more, and I intend on posting follow-up articles to address them. Try them out and let me know how it works for you. Last but not least, please COMMENT
and let me know your thoughts on this posting!
