There’s a reason why they created the phrase “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”. It’s because it’s true! Just look at Britney Spears, R Kelly, Michael Jackson and the Octuplet Mom to name a few. Regardless how they received their attention, the fact is that they HAVE ATTENTION. You might think playing it safe is a good move, because you don’t want to alienate visitors, but the opposite is true. By being just another plain vanilla blog, you are not giving people a reason to keep coming back!
What will he (or she) say next? That’s’ the kind of buzz you need to get and keep traffic. My last post, “Use Link Swaps to Increase Search Engine Ranking” DEFINELTY fits that bill. I’ll be the first to admit, I had been in a comment slump for a few weeks before making that post. But it instantly got a comment a few minutes after being posted because a reader read it and strongly disagreed with it.
I replied to his comment only to receive two more comments shortly after that. Because I made a post supporting a traffic strategy that these individuals STRONGLY disagreed with, I ended up creating a lively discussion. The end result is what any blogger can hope for – engaged readers and interest. It doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong in this case!
Instead of focusing only on tips, updates and how-to’s you should publish regularly editorials based on your opinion, and don’t sanitize it. If you’re afraid of ruffling feathers, you can to stick to writing “safe” content along with the rest of the unknown bloggers out there. Like Marketing Guru Seth Godin says in his book “Purple Cow”, you need to stand out from the herd.
You could also seek out peers in your niche and challenge their ideas if you disagree with them. It’s not only good promotion for both of you, but if could actually enlighten yourself to a different point of view. It also will show that you believe in what you’re saying and are not afraid of others challenging your ideas. If you are spreading knowledge unchallenged, who really knows if your information is good enough?
So don’t afraid to state your opinion. Editorials, Critiques and Opinion pieces need to be a regular part of your content if you want to stand out. Controversy IS good for business, otherwise Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian would just be high-profile PORN stars. They managed to take the attention they gained from their “films” to catapult themselves into mainstream stardom. Wouldn’t you like to do that with your blog? (minus the hardcore of course!)
Do you strongly agree, disagree or did I simply piss you off? Let me know by leaving a Comment. Be heard!
