Why your Blog Sucks PDF Print E-mail

Your Mom thinks your special
So you have a blog with a pretty decent template and great content.  You really think its great and your friends, family and acquaintances think its really awesome - they are truly impressed.  You have widgets, video, downloads, tag clouds, blah, blah blah. You labor over it for hours on end and send tweets, and facebook updates whenever you add new content.   Here's the sad but true reality - 99.99% of the Internet population doesn't really care.

Who are you to them? What makes you different from the MILLIONS - yes MILLIONS of other bloggers out there?  Why should they read or care about your "Cool Wordpress Plugins" article when there are hundreds of articles written about the same topic?  You need to stand out from the crowd to attract a mainstream following and to make your efforts truly worthwhile.  The first thing you need to realize is you can't do that by following the "herd" and fitting in.

What makes
you so important?
What's your pitch, your hook, your angle?  Mine is that I'm the Coolest Geek you'll ever meet.  I idolize Larry Page and Bill Gates as much as I idolize Jay-Z and Tupac.   I can play XBox Live all day, listen to Metallica and then hit the clubs and sing along to Jamie Foxx's Blame it on the Alcohol wit my homies. I can go from reading the latest issue of the "New Avengers" comic and then read "XXL". There are plenty of "geek" bloggers, and plenty of "cool" bloggers, but I'm the only "Cool Geek" that I am currently aware of:)  What's your angle?

Why should I waste my time reading your posts? I can just go play Resident Evil instead.
I'm sure your material is interesting to you but do your readers even care about what your writing? What do they gain from reading your blog?  Are they going to lose weight, get story-line spoilers, hear the latest gossip, make money, or get (more or better) sex?  You need to be writing with these things in mind.  If I find a blogger educating me on something I need to do to improve my situation in life or to entertainment, chances are that I will return and tell my friends about it. One of the reasons why search is so vital is because people use the web as a utility - to fill a need.  They search for that need FIRST which is why PPC and organic rankings matter so much! Fill a need and you'll be the MAN (or woman!).

I want to use you
Another reason why "popular" blogs are so popular is because of the leech effect.  Popular blogs have massive traffic - and other bloggers want to ride this traffic to bring eyeballs back to their blogs.  They leave comments and participate to get people from these larger blogs to get to know them so that hopefully they will follow them back to their smaller blogs.  Ever heard the phrase "act the role".  You need to act the role of a "big dog" until you actually get there.  The more comments and participation that people observe on your site, the more THEY will want to participate - so they can leech some exposure from you.  It will eventually create a snowball effect and you will soon have a very active blog.

You just wasted your time
If you don't implement these strategies, then ha-ha, thanks for the unique page view - you just wasted your time.  I may have come across as an asshole, but this is the current reality online.  Working tirelessly for nothing is worse than not being told at all that you are wasting your time.  I was just like you, wasting hours, days, weeks and months away waiting for the "big" break as a blogger.  It wasn't until I started implementing these and other strategies that I started gaining any traction.  The reality is that the "big dogs" already know these tactics and they are using them every day - and they sometimes play dirty.

Create a "gimmick" or an angle, fill a need, and "act the role" of a big dog until you make it and you'll have a higher chance of success.  Who wants to hang out a boring party when there's a lively one across the street where all the cool kids are invited to? Your blog is currently the boring party. Think about what I said and apply the knowledge to your blog!  You'll thank me later;)
